The Tuen Mun South Extension - Striving to minimise the works impact on the existing railway and the community

The Tuen Mun South Extension will extend the Tuen Ma Line southward by approximately 2.4 kilometres from Tuen Mun Station via a viaduct. Two new stations will be constructed, including an intermediate station at Area 16 (A16 Station) and a new terminal station at Tuen Mun South near the Tuen Mun Ferry Pier, with a targeted completion in 2030.
A16 Station will be located at the existing Tuen Mun Swimming Pool, with station design blending in with the Tuen Mun riverside. Tuen Mun South Station will be located on Wu King Road near the Tuen Mun Ferry Pier, adjacent to the Light Rail and connecting to the promenade. The stations have successfully attained “BEAM Plus” Provisional Gold or above certification.
The Tuen Mun South Extension is designed to extend the operating railway, and the project is being built in the densely populated Tuen Mun community. The project team strives to minimise the works impact on the existing railway and the community as the top priority from planning to design and construction. During the design of the viaduct, the project team strived to minimise the impact of works on the community by reducing the number of piers and adopting a slender design to reduce the required occupation of river space and avoid alterations to existing facilities on the river.
The viaduct and part of the A16 Station of the Tuen Mun South Extension was constructed along the Tuen Mun River. To prepare for the foundation and structural works for the viaduct and A16 Station, temporary working platforms were built using concrete blocks, rocks and steel materials.
Demolition of footbridges’ deck to make way for constructing Tuen Mun South Station
Tuen Mun South Station will be an elevated station on Wu King Road near the Tuen Mun Ferry Pier, adjacent to the Light Rail and connecting to the promenade. To create space for the station construction, the bridge decks of Siu Hei Bridge and Wu Yuet Bridge across Wu King Road were demolished in August and September 2024 respectively.
As these two bridges are situated on the bustling Wu King Road, the project team meticulously worked on calculations and procedures in advance to ensure minimal impact on the surrounding neighourhood. The team first made use of daytime hours for preparation works, followed by the progressive lifting of the bridges’ roofs and decks after closing Wu King Road in the middle of the night.
Siu Hei Bridge will be re-provisioned and connected to the future Tuen Mun South Station, while Wu Yuet Bridge will be replaced by a permanent at-grade crossing, connecting to the future Tuen Mun South Station entrance.
Foundation and pier construction for the railway viaduct has commenced progressively
The viaduct and part of the A16 Station of the Tuen Mun South Extension will be constructed along the Tuen Mun River. To prepare for the foundation and structural works for the viaduct and A16 Station, temporary working platforms were built using concrete blocks, rocks and steel materials.
With the temporary working platforms over the Tuen Mun River being built gradually, foundation and pier construction for the railway viaduct of the Tuen Mun South Extension has commenced progressively along the river to lay a solid foundation for the superstructure construction that started by the end of 2025. During construction, the temporary working platforms built on the river also occupy minimal river area to maintain unimpeded river flow. A temporary river-crossing access is also built to provide a direct access route to deliver construction materials to the works sites, which will reduce the burden on road traffic.
In order to maintain the smooth flow of the river, the design has been optimised to reduce the number of piers required on the river by approximately 10 percent. As a result, fewer than 30 sets of piers employing slender cylindrical and V-shaped pier designs will be constructed on the river, which will effectively reduce the occupation of river space. In addition, the viaduct alignment was carefully planned to be close to the riverside, with the locations of the piers bypassing the three existing footbridges and one vehicular bridge across the river to maintain the pedestrian and vehicular flow.
Re-provisioning works
The Tuen Mun South Extension project extends the Tuen Ma Line from Tuen Mun Station via a viaduct, passing through a new intermediate station at Area 16, with a new terminal station at Tuen Mun South near the Tuen Mun Ferry Pier. As the original Tuen Mun Swimming Pool was located within the footprint of the A16 Station, the project team needed to demolish the pool and re-provision it at a new location. The new Tuen Mun Swimming Pool is located at the Tuen Mun Recreation and Sports Centre adjacent to the Light Rail Depot Stop. The project team leveraged Building Information Modelling (BIM) technology to optimise project planning and completed the re-provisioning works in approximately two years’ time. The facilities have comprehensively been upgraded, including the addition of all-weather indoor heated pools, doubling the number of seats in the indoor spectator stand, and enhancing barrier-free facilities.
With the completion of this key re-provisioning work, the Corporation has commenced the demolition of the original Tuen Mun Swimming Pool to release the site for the full-scale construction of A16 Station.
The railway extension gradually takes shape
The two major works of the project - construction of the Tuen Mun South Station and the railway viaduct - are progressing. Foundation and pier construction for the railway viaduct extension along the Tuen Mun River are progressing smoothly, with superstructure construction having commenced. Underground utility works and temporary road diversions have been completed gradually to facilitate the integration of the future station structure into the community. Foundation works for Tuen Mun South Station are also progressing in full swing, with structural construction expected to commence later this year. The project will then fully enter the structural construction stage, during which the railway extension will gradually take shape.
